CPJ Europe Representative Marthoz is a Belgian journalist and longtime press freedom and human rights activist. He teaches international journalism at the Université catholique de Louvain in Belgium and has reported from many countries for the Brussels daily Le Soir and the quarterly Enjeux internationaux. He is the associate editor of the policy quarterly Europe's World and is the vice-chair of the Europe and Central Asia division at Human Rights Watch, where he was European press director from 1996 to 2006. He has written several books on journalism, human rights diplomacy, and international relations as well as reports for a number of think tanks and international organizations. He is currently working on the role of the press in reporting mass atrocities and genocides.
