Weekend Hackathon Puts Focus on Verification of Social, Photos, Video & Data
Can journalism and communications schools help shape the next generation of media entrepreneurs? Many schools have created special “labs” and innovation centers and are running courses aimed at building startups — and a startup mentality. But how can they share knowledge, improve skills and have fun doing it? MediaShift is producing our third annual Journalism School Hackathon on the October 21 to 23 weekend, co-produced and hosted by the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. We’re convening a group of top students (graduates and undergraduates), faculty and professionals for the weekend Hackathon, with a real-world mission of creating startups around fact-checking and verifying online media. Students will have a chance to collaborate on diverse teams of students with faculty and pro facilitators. And they will be able to create startups in one of four threads: social media, photos, video or data.
No coding background is needed! The Hackathon is actually more like a Startup Weekend, with the creation of a startup name, business model and pitch deck.
Thanks to the Ford Foundation, we were able to offer 11 travel scholarships up to $500 for students who can’t otherwise afford to get to the Hackathon. Those scholarships have been given out now.
How It Works
From the students, faculty and pros assembled, we’ll create “dream teams” with people from various schools on one team. Each team will have a mix of necessary disciplines — editor/producer, designer, tech person, business-savyy pro or faculty facilitator — who will learn to work together in the crucible of the weekend hackathon. The weekend will be a combination of focused talks and training from innovation leaders and experts, work sessions and final presentations of startups from each team. Faculty and industry experts will provide expertise to each team and help them rapidly develop their solution. Judges will pick a winning team based on the startup’s viability, feasibility and desirability.
Each team will be comprised of students who will be doing the main work of brainstorming, designing and presenting their idea. Faculty and pros who attend will also be assigned to teams (or as floating mentors) to serve as facilitators and resources for the students — helping them stay on track and making sure all the students participate on the team.
Jim Flannery is executive director of Four Athens where he helps early-stage ventures focus on customer discovery, raising capital, and growth strategies. He is also the managing member of the Athens Angel Fund and oversees its active investments in the Southeast. Prior to starting Four Athens, Jim was the co-founder of Dealmobs, an e-commerce marketplace. Jim began his career raising capital for alternative energy and technology companies in San Francisco.
Jared Bybee is an attorney, social entrepreneur and professor. As the director of Thinc., Bybee oversees its numerous programs linking town and campus innovation communities and the development and expansion of the Thinc. student and faculty network. He has worked at the University of Georgia in a variety of capacities over the past four years, teaching in the UGA School of Law and Terry College of Business, as well as serving as faculty at the university’s leadership institute. Bybee was director of operations for Paygo Ghana, a social enterprise focused on the distribution of solar powered lamps in West Africa.
Shelley Hancock is the Lifestyles Product Lead for The Weather Channel’s digital properties. She directs an agile team focused on building health and activity products for users on weather.com, iPhone and Android platforms. These products look at various data points through the lens of weather, providing users vital information for planning their day. Prior to joining The Weather Channel in 2010, Shelley spent more than 9 years at Turner Broadcasting System, partnering with the marketing teams of the Atlanta Hawks, CNN, Cartoon Network, and Adult Swim. In this capacity she managed print and digital collateral aspects of various media campaigns and events. She is a graduate of University of Georgia’s Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication with extensive experience in the Media space having contributed in agencies, cable television and digital realms.
M. Cole Jones is a co-founder of covello and the gladiator. His experience ranges from chartering organizations in South Africa to working to bring transparency and results for non-profits and corporations. M. Cole is responsible for marketing, sales, strategy, back flips in Vegas, and overall excitement. He’s the mastermind behind fishbowl and also the reason AT&T was covello’s first big client. M. Cole was born in Connecticut, grew up in the islands before making his way back to the States and North Carolina. He has an MBA in marketing from ECU, is a former backyard acrobat, and newly wedded husband.
Claire Wardle is the Research Director at Columbia University’s Tow Center for Digital Journalism. She is also the co-founder of Eyewitness Media Hub, a non-profit initiative committed to providing content creators and publishers with continuing research and resources. She is one of the world’s experts on user-generated content, and has led two substantial research projects investigating how it is handled by news organizations. In 2009, she was asked by BBC News to develop their Social Newsgathering and Verification training program. She went on to train over 3000 journalists in newsrooms around the world. She was also the Director of News Services for Storyful, and Senior Social Media Office at the UN Agency for Refugees (UNHCR). Wardle holds a PhD in Communications and an MA in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania. She also sits on the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on the Future of Information and Entertainment.
Mark Glaser is founder and executive editor of MediaShift. He is a longtime freelance journalist whose career includes columns on hip-hop, reviews of videogames, travel stories, and humor columns that poked fun at the titans of technology. Glaser won the Innovation Journalism Award in 2010 from the Stanford Center for Innovation and Communication. Glaser has been a guest on PBS’ “Newshour,” NPR’s “Talk of the Nation,” KALW’s “Media Roundtable” and has been a speaker and moderator at many industry conferences. Mark E. Johnson is the Senior Lecturer of Photojournalism and Chief Technology Officer for the University of Georgia’s Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. He oversees the college’s visual journalism programs including directing multiple immersive workshops around the state of Georgia. As a member of the visiting faculty at the Poynter Institute he trains journalists and journalism educators on how to use new technologies in their work without losing site of the purpose of journalism – to improve communities through knowledge. The Hackathon will be hosted by the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. The Grady College offers undergraduate degrees in advertising, public relations, journalism and entertainment and media studies, along with certificates in new media and sports media. The College also offers a master’s and doctoral degree in mass communication, as well as a certificate in media industry research. The College is home to several prominent centers and institutes, including the Peabody Awards, recognized as the most prestigious award in electronic journalism, and the National Press Photographers Association, the largest association of visual journalists in the country. Grady’s faculty includes internationally known researchers and respected industry professionals. The Media Innovation Lab (MILab) provides Texas State University with a central point for a broad range of digital media activities – scholarship, curriculum, courses, faculty development, community networking and events. The space, located in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, includes a student lab, laptop lounge, teaching lab, maker space and multimedia conference room. Registration fees help cover the cost of food and drinks, as well as producing the weekend Hackathon. Registration costs $129 for faculty and professionals, and $69 for students.

Charles N. Davis is the Dean of the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. He was appointed in 2013, after a long career in journalism. Davis worked for ten years as a journalist after his graduation from North Georgia College, working for newspapers, magazines and a news service in Georgia and Florida before leaving full-time journalism to complete a masters degree from the University of Georgia’s Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication and to earn a doctorate in mass communication from the University of Florida. He spent 14 years as a faculty member, including four as department chair at the Missouri School of Journalism. Davis also spent five years at Mizzou as Executive Director of the National Freedom of Information Coalition. His teaching awards include the Scripps Howard Foundation National Journalism Teacher of the Year Award in 2008, the Provost’s Award for Junior Faculty Teaching in 2001, and the University of Missouri Alumni Association’s Faculty/Alumni Award in 2008.

Colleen McEdwards is a 30-year veteran journalist and academic helping the next generation of journalists discover what’s next for news. She spent 18 years as an anchor and correspondent for CNN International. She began her career with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation covering politics in both Canada, the United States and the former Soviet Union. Passions: Giving back to a profession that provided a front row view of history; helping students find their inner entrepreneur; mentoring writers across all media platforms; experiential learning. McEdwards has founded and directed international programs such as “Media Entrepreneurship” in Hong Kong. McEdwards is actively involved in the Hong Kong and Atlanta startup communities forging partnerships and mentoring students.
Bob Pinckney serves as the Director of the Entrepreneurship Program at the University of Georgia. He is active on several boards including the Soft Goods Education Foundation Board and the Georgia 4-H Foundation Board. Following graduation from the University of Georgia with a Business Degree in Economics, Pinckney attended Harvard Business School earning his MBA. After Harvard, he returned to Georgia as Director of Development with Portman Properties in Atlanta and San Francisco. Pinckney went on to a career with Probursa Investment Bank in New York and Mexico City as the President and CEO of their International Broker-Dealer and Private Bank. Pinckney eventually left Probursa to create and build several global high-technology telecommunications companies with a client base spanning Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the U.S. In 2010 Pinckney led a group of investors in providing growth capital to create EvoShield, a leading brand of athletic protective gear and apparel, where he led the growth and development of the company as CEO.
