Media and Journalism Fellowships: March 24 Edition

Here’s a list of current media and journalism fellowship programs, including the deadlines for applying. If we’re missing any major programs, please use our Contact Form to let us know, and we’ll add them to the list. 

MARCH 2015 DEADLINES

African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative
Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo
As part of its African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative, the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) is leading five trips to the region over the course of 2015, with this upcoming cycle focusing on Tanzania and the DRC. The first three days of the trip consist of comprehensive security training and briefings by regional experts. Participating journalists then have one week of in-country independent reporting as well as group activities, and have the opportunity to interact with key multi-sector stakeholders and local journalists. The IWMF pays for fellowship-related expenses, including travel, lodging, meals and fixers/interpreters unless a selected journalist’s news organization wishes to assume these costs.

Bringing Home the World: International Reporting Fellowship Program for Minority Journalists

The Bringing Home the World Fellowship helps U.S.-based minority journalists cover compelling yet under-reported international stories, increasing the diversity of voices in global news. The program helps level the playing field and redress the inequality minority journalists often face by giving them the opportunity to report from overseas and advance their careers.

Grist Fellowship Program
The Grist Fellowship Program is an opportunity for early-career journalists to hone their skills at a national news outlet and deepen their knowledge of environmental issues. The fellowship offers exposure to the leading sustainability thinkers and theories of our time, real-world experience at a fast-paced news site, and the occasional scrumptious snacks.

Howard G. Buffet Fund for Women Journalists
Various locations
With funding from the Howard G. Buffet Foundation, the International Women’s Media Foundation has an open call for grant proposals from women journalists around the world. The Fund will support a variety of projects, including educational opportunities, investigative reporting and media development initiatives.

APRIL 2015 DEADLINES

Jacque I. Minnotte Health Reporting Fellowship
This fellowship recognizes excellence in health or medical television and radio reporting. In addition to the $2,000 award, winners of the Jacque I. Minnotte Health Reporting Fellowship are invited to attend the Excellence in Journalism conference.

Michele Clark Fellowship
This fellowship is awarded to a young, promising minority professional in television or radio news. In addition to the $1,000 award, winners of the Michele Clark Fellowships are invited to attend the Excellence in Journalism conference.

N.S. Bienstock Fellowship
This fellowship is awarded to a young, promising minority professional in television or radio news. In addition to the $1,000 award, winners of the Michele Clark Fellowships are invited to attend the Excellence in Journalism conference.

The Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism
Atlanta, GA
The one-year fellowship is offered to six journalists and is designed to enhance public understanding of mental health issues and combat stigma and discrimination against people with mental illness.

U.S.-Austrian Journalism Exchange Fellowships
U.S. and Austria
Each year three to six outstanding media professionals from the United States and Austria are awarded an opportunity to report from and travel in each other’s countries as part of the U.S.-Austrian Journalism Exchange Fellowships. The program offers young print and broadcast journalists from each country the opportunity to share professional expertise with their colleagues across the Atlantic while working as “foreign correspondents” for their hometown news organizations. The program aims to foster greater understanding and knowledge of both countries among future media leaders and their audiences.

Vada and Col. Barney Oldfield National Security Reporting Fellowship
This fellowship is awarded to a reporter or producer in radio or television news engaged covering national defense and security. In addition to the $1,000 award, winners are invited to attend the Excellence in Journalism conference.

IN PROGRESS OR FUTURE FELLOWSHIPS

Associated Press Global News Internship Program
Various locations
This paid internship program is for students who are aspiring cross-format journalists and will contribute to AP’s text, video, photo and interactive reporting.

Fellowship in Professional Journalism for Morning News Journalists
Dallas, TX
The fellow will contribute to the student-generated news website at the University of Texas at Austin Moody College of Communication as well as teach a course in her own expertise.

Kyoto Prize Journalism Fellowship
San Diego, CA
The Kyoto Prize Journalism Fellowship at Point Lomo Nazarene University is an initiative to develop modern education in the sciences, philosophy, society and the arts.

MJ Bear Fellowship
Through the Online News Association, the MJ Bear Fellowships identify and celebrate early-career digital journalists who have demonstrated that they deserve support for their efforts.

National Geographic Photography Fellowship
Various locations
The two-year fellowship allows photographers to share their visual expertise with diverse areas of the National Geographic Society and with the public, producing stories, sharing their storytelling knowledge with other explorers, and bringing the Society’s mission to illuminate, teach, and inspire the world at large.

Scripps Howard Foundation Multimedia Fellowship
Washington DC
This year-long fellowship allows post-graduates to create multimedia projects for the Scripps Howard Foundation Wire’s website as well as mentor undergraduate students.

World Press Institute Fellowship
Various locations
The fellowship is offered to 10 journalists from around the world and provides immersion into governance, politics, business, media, journalistic ethics and culture of the United States.
