Media and Journalism Awards: July 28 Edition

Here’s a list of current media and journalism awards, including deadlines for applying. If we’re missing any major awards, please contact Mark Glaser at mark [at] mediashift [dot] org, and we’ll add them to the list. Any Featured Awards are paid sponsorships.

JULY & BEYOND DEADLINES

The FoST Prize
Future of Storytelling
The FoST Prize is awarded to the most exceptional interactive story of the year, which may include but is not limited to virtual and augmented reality, web-based films, data-driven projects, mobile apps, narrative games, multimedia installations, and other multiplatform projects. This year a panel of judges will choose up to 20 of the best submitted projects to be released to the public for online and onsite voting. The project that receives the most votes will win $10,000 and be announced on the last day of FoST Week, October 9th, 2016.
Deadline: July 29, 2016

Katherine Schneider Journalism Award for Excellence in Reporting on Disability
National Center on Disability and Journalism
The Schneider Award is the first national journalism contest devoted exclusively to disability coverage. Entries must be published or aired between July 1, 2015, and June 30, 2016. Entries will be accepted from print publications, radio or television outlets and online-only publications.
Deadline: July 31, 2016

Shorty Social Good Awards
Sawhorse Media
The Shorty Social Good Awards honor groundbreaking corporate social responsibility and sustainability campaigns that organizational and marketing teams have worked so hard to realize. While the Shorty Awards have long-honored the best of social media, this competition includes efforts made by organizations to improve sustainability and diversity internally, foster globally-minded business partnerships and increase employee community and civic engagement.
Deadline: August 31, 2016

Debra E. Bernhardt Labor Journalism Prize
Labor Arts
The Bernhardt Prize is an award of $500 given to an article or series of articles that furthers the understanding of the history of working people.  Articles focused on historical events AND articles about current issues (work, housing, organizing, health, education) that include historical context are both welcome.  The work should be published — in print or online — in a union or workers’ center publication or by an independent/free-lance journalist.
Deadline: Sep. 1, 2016

New Media Film Festival Awards
For years, The New Media Film Festival has led the way in the pursuit of stories worth telling, the exploration of new media technologies, boundary pushing resulting in new distribution models and creating and establishing new methodologies in the global monetization of content. A total of $45,000 in awards will be given out.
Early Deadline: Sep. 3, 2016

PILOT Innovation Challenge
National Association of Broadcasters
PILOT is calling on all entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs and creative thinkers to submit their ideas for accelerating broadcast innovation in the first annual PILOT Innovation Challenge. The challenge question: How might local television and radio broadcasters engage their communities with next generation content on any device, whether big, small or moving?
Deadline: Sep. 23, 2016

The awards honor Asian publishers that have excelled in their digital offerings.

The awards is an international contest recognizing outstanding work in data journalism worldwide.

The Mirror Awards honor excellence in media industry reporting in various categories for various forms of media.

New America Award
Society of Professional Journalists
SPJ’s New America Award honors public service journalism that explores and exposes an issue of importance to immigrant or ethnic communities currently living in the United States.

Pulitzer Prizes
Columbia University
The Pulitzer Prize awards achievements in newspaper and online journalism, literature and musical composition.

Scripps International Innovators Cup
Scripps College of Communication, Ohio University
The Scripps International Innovators Cup invites colleges and universities to pit their best student team around a new media business idea with other teams from around the world.

Selden Ring Award
Presented by the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, the Selden Ring Award highlights the importance of investigative journalism in modern day reporting. Nominations are generally received in January.

Sigma Delta Chi Awards
Society of Professional journalists
The awards recognize the best in professional journalism in categories covering print, radio, television, newsletters, art/graphics, online and research.

Society of Professional Journalists Awards
The Society of Professional Journalists has various awards for professional to collegiate journalists for excellence in various forms of media. Awards are rolling and there are several with deadlines in June. Please check the site for more details.

The Bookmarks Awards
Digital Media and Marketing Association
The Bookmarks Awards, based in South Africa, honor excellence in digital work, from websites, app development and games to multimedia and digital journalism.

The Cabot Prizes
The Columbia Journalism Awards
The prizes recognize a distinguished body of work that has contributed to Inter-American understanding.
