DBW E-book Bestsellers: Hachette Titles, Average Price Inch Upward

The past several weeks have not seen particularly strong showings for Hachette on the E-book Best-Seller List, partly because of the publisher’s battle with Amazon and partly because of the steep competition from competitors, especially Penguin Random House.

But this week Hachette titles are making a modest comeback, led by James Patterson’s “Burn,” which debuts at No. 6. That comes at a week when one of Hachette’s best-performing ebooks for the past few months, Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer-winning “The Goldfinch,” falls off the list.

Nevertheless, the publisher scores two titles within the top ten this week (four altogether make the latest list), with Nicholas Sparks’s “The Best of Me” joining “Burn”–a first in many weeks.

Meanwhile, a self-published title debuts at No. 2: “Stepbrother Dearest,” by best-selling author Penelope Ward.

The average price of a best-selling e-book climbs to $7.74 from $7.57 last week, aided by the significant portion of titles priced above $10–of which this week there are seven.

E-book best-sellers from the week ending 10/4:

  1. “Gone Girl: A Novel,” Gillian Flynn, Penguin Random House, $7.99
  2. “Stepbrother Dearest,” Penelope Ward, self-published, $2.99

  4. “Gray Mountain: A Novel,” John Grisham, Penguin Random House, $11.99
  5. “Killing Patton: The Strange Death of World War II’s Most Audacious General,” Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard, Macmillan, $9.99
